Removing Common Household Stains from Furniture

Everyone knows the instant dread felt when you spill something or stain a favorite piece of furniture. Removing stains from furniture can be time consuming and costly, leading many to decide to simply throw the piece away and buy a new one.

That said, there are some common household stains that are easy to remove from furniture, using just a few simple steps. How successful you are depends on what kind of stain you’re dealing with, the surface of the furniture, and how hard you’re willing to work. Below are some tips for how to remove some of the most common household stains.

Grease on Fabric

Removing grease stains may be simpler than you think. Simply purchase a stick of plain white chalk and rub it onto the affected area. The chalk will help absorb the grease and will make it easy to remove the rest of the stain using soap and water.

Permanent Marker on Leather

Dampen a cloth with hairspray and gently rub the marked area. Once you have massaged the stain our, wipe away residue and use a leather conditioner to protect your furniture.

Coffee on Fabric

If the stain is fresh, use a sponge damped with cold water to blot it up. Once done, or if the stain is dry, mix one tablespoon of hand soap with two cups of cold water. Use a clean cloth to blot this mixture onto the coffee stain until it is gone.

Crayon can be easily removed from almost any surface by rubbing a small amount of WD-40 onto the area with a clean rag.

Ink from Fabric and Some Leathers

Simple rubbing alcohol will remove ink from fabric surfaces and some leather surfaces. Gently massage rubbing alcohol into the affected area with a clean rag and watch the ink stain fade away.

Rust on Metal

There are two mixtures that will make rust stains disappear: lemon juice and salt or mild dish soap mixed with ammonia. Use a stiff-bristled brush to rub either mixture onto the rusty metal and it should go away in no time. If the rust is very old or persistent try soaking the item in vinegar for a few hours before scrubbing.
